1. Inspect the VHS cassette before playback

Check the cassette shell and the visible section of tape before putting it into a VCR. Look for obvious mould, moisture, broken parts, severe creasing or contamination. 2. Test the VCR with a non-essential tape first

If the VCR has been sitting unused for years, do not make an irreplaceable wedding or family recording its first test. Use an expendable tape first and check that playback is stable, the machine winds correctly and the tape comes back out in the same condition it went in.

3. Connect the VCR to the capture device

Connect the VCR’s video and audio outputs to the matching inputs on your capture device, then connect the capture device to the computer. If you are using a SCART adaptor, make sure it is configured for output if the adaptor has an input/output switch.

4. Open the capture software and select the correct source

6. Stop the recording and check the digital file

When the wanted footage has finished, stop the capture and save the file. Do not assume success just because the software completed. Open the finished file, jump through several sections and check the beginning and end, audio, picture stability and duration.

7. Make a backup

Digitisation removes your dependence on a VHS player, but one digital file on one device is still a single point of failure. Keep at least one additional copy somewhere separate from the first.
