VHS to Digital FAQs
Found a box of tapes and not sure where to start? Read our guide to what to do with old VHS tapes, or use the answers below for pricing, formats, secure delivery, storage and the VHS conversion process.
How much does VHS to digital conversion cost?
Digital download conversion starts at £11.99 for one tape. Volume pricing reduces the effective price to £10.99 per tape for 2 tapes, £10.49 for 3, £9.99 for 4–6, £9.49 for 7–10 and £8.99 for 11–20. For 21 or more tapes, contact us for a bulk quote, with digital conversion priced from £8.49 per tape. DVD conversion is £1 more per tape than the equivalent digital order. We provide the postage label for sending your tapes to us and there is no separate UK shipping charge added at checkout.
What is the best format for VHS to digital?
We believe the best format for VHS to digital is a high-quality MP4 file. Your VHS tapes are converted directly into MP4 format because it is widely supported and works seamlessly on laptops, smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs. You can easily download, store, and back up these files.
Can I choose DVD instead of a digital download?
Yes. If you prefer a physical disc, choose our VHS to DVD conversion product. The MP4 digital download and DVD services are separate products, so select the format you want before checkout.
How do I send my VHS tapes securely?
After placing your order, you will receive a postage label by email. Simply package your tapes securely and drop them off at your local Post Office or courier drop point.
Tip: Standard VHS tapes fit perfectly into 15 x 48 cm padded mailers! We highly recommend wrapping your tapes in bubble wrap and placing them in a sturdy mailer or box to ensure they travel safely.
How long does VHS conversion take?
Turnaround times vary depending on volume, but most orders are completed within a few working days after your tapes arrive. You will receive updates when your tapes are received safely and again when your digital files are ready.
Are my original VHS tapes returned?
Yes. Your original tapes are carefully packaged and returned to you safely after the conversion is complete.
Why should I convert VHS to digital now?
VHS tapes deteriorate over time. The magnetic layer weakens, causing fading picture quality, colour distortion and audio loss. VHS players are no longer manufactured, making it harder to access your recordings.
Converting to digital creates a modern copy that is easier to back up, store and share without relying on the original tape.
Are my memories safe?
Absolutely. All conversions are handled in-house using specialist equipment. We do not outsource your tapes to third parties. Your videos are processed securely, and your digital files are delivered via a protected, private download link.
Is there a maximum tape length?
Most standard VHS tapes are supported, regardless of standard recording lengths. If you are unsure about a particularly long recording, feel free to contact us before ordering.
What if my tape is damaged?
We handle all tapes carefully and will inform you if there are any major issues during playback. Minor playback problems or static can often still be transferred successfully.
Do you offer bulk discounts?
Yes. Digital pricing is £10.99 per tape for 2 tapes, £10.49 for 3, £9.99 for 4–6, £9.49 for 7–10 and £8.99 for 11–20. For 21+ tapes, contact us for a bulk quote, with digital conversion from £8.49 per tape. DVD conversion is £1 more per tape. The product selector shows the exact total for orders of up to 20 tapes.
What is your returns and cancellation policy?
Because we provide a highly personalised service by converting your unique family VHS tapes into custom digital files, we cannot offer standard returns or refunds once the digitisation process has begun. However, we always want to make sure your memories are safe and sound!
Cancellations: If you change your mind before you have posted your tapes to us, simply drop us an email and we will issue a full, no-questions-asked refund.
Faulty Media: If a DVD arrives damaged in the post or a delivered digital file is corrupted, please let us know within 30 days of receiving your order. We will happily send out a free replacement or offer a refund for the faulty media, in line with your statutory rights.
Blank or Broken Tapes: If you send us a tape and it turns out to be completely blank or physically impossible to play, we will refund you for that specific tape and safely post it back to you.
Can I share my digital files with family?
Yes! Once downloaded, your MP4 files can be freely copied, backed up, and shared with family members. Many of our customers use cloud storage or external hard drives to keep multiple backups for different family members.
How long do VHS tapes last, and do VHS tapes degrade?
Yes, VHS tapes can degrade, but there is no honest single expiry date. Their usable life depends on the tape formulation, storage conditions and handling history. For the evidence, warning signs and safer storage advice, read our dedicated guide to how long VHS tapes last. If you are deciding what to keep, sell, donate or digitise, our old VHS tape guide covers those practical options.
How to preserve VHS tapes?
Store VHS cassettes upright in their boxes in a cool, stable and relatively dry place, away from direct sunlight, damp and strong magnetic fields. Digitising an important tape protects the recorded content from further VHS-tape deterioration, but the resulting digital files still need sensible backups and may need to be copied to newer storage over time. See our guide to keeping, digitising and disposing of old VHS tapes for a simple step-by-step approach.
Do you offer a local drop-off service in Newcastle?
Yes. We can arrange local drop-off by appointment for customers in Newcastle and the North East. See our Newcastle VHS drop-off and conversion details for how the service works, then contact us before placing your order. Because local drop-off avoids return postage, local pricing can differ. Customers elsewhere in the UK can use our secure mail-in service.
